Industry Employment and Related Information
The links on this Web page provide access to numerous sources of industry data. Please note that industry classifications are in the process of change, so some links access data using the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). Other links access classified using the newer North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) (U.S. Bureau of the Census)
NAICS is a system for classifying industry statistics for business activity across North America. The system was developed jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. NAICS groups the economy into 20 broad sectors, up from the 10 divisions of the SIC system. Both NAICS and the prior SIC system classify establishments by their primary type of business activity.
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System (U.S. Bureau of the Census)
Numerous data sets are still available with SIC-based data.
CEW Establishments, Employment, and Wages (California Employment Development Department)
These data are derived from the Covered Employment and Wages (CEW) program for workers covered by unemployment insurance programs. (The CEW data are also referred to as ES-202 data.) The information provides a tabulation of the number of establishments, and employment and wages for the state and counties, down to the 4-digit SIC code level.
County Business Patterns Establishment, Employment and Payroll (U.S. Bureau of the Census)
County Business Patterns (CBP) is a database of employment information for all U.S. states and counties. (The data do not include self-employed persons, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production workers, or most government employees.)
